How to care for dry skin?
There are four basic skin types; dry skin, oily skin, combination, and normal skin type. Each skin type is determined by genetics. ‘Dry’ is a word used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum or oil and can’t retain moisture. Dry skin tends to be flaky, itchy, rough, tight, and dull. While it is a genetic condition, many factors can contribute to dryness both external and internal. External factors are the most common and much easier to correct. Some external factors include using harsh soaps, drying skincare products, having hot and long showers, dry air and cold weather, washing the skin excessively, and overexposure to sunlight.
Although dry skin is a skin condition, it can be managed or cared for in such a way that there won’t be frequent flakiness, itchiness, dull appearance, or any other symptoms associated with dry skin. Below are the most common ways to care for dry skin and revive its glow.
How to properly care for or manage dry skin?
AVOID USING HOT WATER AND SPEND LESS TIME IN SHOWER:
Hot water strip the skin of its natural protective oils. Also using up too much time in water can remove the oils on the skin. To prevent dryness, take short baths, and use warm water.
MOISTURIZE DAILY:
Moisturizing is also important to prevent the skin from drying. It is advisable to moisturizer immediately after a shower to lock or seal in moisture in the skin. This method improves the skin barrier and promotes water retention in the skin. A few ingredients to look out for when purchasing a good moisturizer include; ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and Glycerin. These ingredients have highly moisturizing power, ceramides enhance the skin barrier why hyaluronic acid and Glycerin hydrates the skin.
USE A MILD OR GENTLE CLEANSER:
Avoid soaps or cleansers containing harsh chemicals, fragrances, and colors that may irritate and dry out the skin. Some of which include Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), essential oils, and artificial oils. It is safer to opt for milder soaps or cleansers without any harsh chemicals that may irritate your skin.
EXFOLIATE REGULARLY:
Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells and excess oils that may clog the pores. The skin renews itself every 28days, shedding dead cells while replacing them with new skin cells. Exfoliating is beneficial when these old cells become stuck on the surface of the skin. It aids the shedding process therefore reducing dry patches and clogged skin pores. Dermatologists recommend AHAs for dry skin types because they are naturally hydrating. Exfoliation should only be done 2-3 times in a week.
AVOID FREQUENT USE OF AIR CONDITIONER: The AC is one of the common external causes of dry skin. Keeping the AC running all the time removes moisture from the skin resulting in dryness. Limit the use of the air conditioner and make use of a humidifier instead.
